Madonna - Turn Up The Radio : Chart Performance Week 1 Single Review

Turn Up The Radio is the fourth song taken from Madonna's twelfth studio album, MDNA.
It follows her last UK-only release, Masterpiece, which was a small hit there as well as in some parts of  Europe and Japan. When Guy O. confirmed this to be a single off the album back in April, it seemed like a safe choice given the song's radio-friendly qualities: upbeat, danceable and positive vibes.

Produced by Martin Solveig, TUTR was originally sung by Sunday Girl singer Jade Williams in 2011 for Solveig's Smash album but never got included in the end. Solveig reworked the track with Madonna for MDNA, still retaining the overall yet tweaked melody but with new lyrics. The result is a summery anthem that could be remotely similar to BEP's I Gotta Feeling and Craig David's Insomnia. Here, it depicts Madonna breaking free from the "crazy scene" by driving out and blasting music from the radio as her stress therapy. The flow seems OK; the only drawback is the rather uninteresting chorus ("Turn up the radio, don't ask me where i wanna go. We gotta turn up the radio.") and the draggy bridge part between 2:16-2:50 ("I just wanna get in my car...") which seems like an everlasting half-a-minute down-tempo interjection. It could've been cut to 15 seconds then compensated with chorus repetitions till the end because it is supposed to be a dance track! Although no single edit that cuts the bridge part came out in the end, Solveig eventually chopped half of the bridge in his Club Mix included on the Digital EP.

Vocals: 2, Production: 2, Lyrics: 1, Chorus Strength: 0.5, Mainstream Appeal: 2 = (7.5/10)

The video stays loyal to the song lyrics and follows one day in the Queen of Pop's life. Shot in Florence, the intentionally-crude clip gathered mixed response from critics and fans alike. One camp calls it fresh and pleasing while another criticizes it for being bland and of below-par production. My views lean on the latter camp believing that Madonna deserved better than a mediocre assembly of instagram footages.

Interscope and the queen's management tried to do what is right for this single by unleashing the video, outstanding remixes and playlisting it on UK's Radio2 weeks ahead of the release to gain just enough attention from fans. They also hoped that the July UK stop of the MDNA Tour wherein the song was performed could substitute in some way for the actual single promo. To top it up, they put it out on Sunday 5th of August (UK) and Tuesday 7th of August (US) to maximize a full week's sales as opposed to the blunderous Friday US releases of GGW & GMAYL... but the result wasn't positive. TUTR failed to make the UK & US Top 100.

  1. The lack of any physical single never helped either.

    1. At this point, i doubt it if there would be. It could've been a great help just like when Kylie's Timebomb returned to the charts after the limited physical copies sold out.

  2. funny i kept trying to buy it last week....as a single, i am old and i don't do itunes prefering to have the disc to copy and play any where I want anytime without worrying about Apple owning me and the music)....but alas, i now understand that I am truly behind the times and can't actualy own it my way...

    1. You can download at Amazon or BeatPort though. A German CD single was previously announced you might want to look out for it within this month. :-)

  3. Why is Turn Up the Radio getting ZERO airplay in the USA? I don't get it. Girl Gone Wild got ZERO US airplay too. Maybe they are waiting for her tour to kick off. It just seems odd she cannot get on radio.

    1. TUTR has yet to go on rotation in the US as there hasn't been an announced radio adds date. But it's high unlikely for it to get plenty of spins anyway. By the time that the MDNA Tour starts its North American dates, it would be too late to even get the single to chart unless fans download the EP the second time.

  4. TUTR has gone out to radio AND the single is available in the USA. It has not even Bubbled Under yet as of the newest Chart dated Sept 1. The US Dance Chart is like a joke. We need TUTR on Radio. Maybe the radio stations will add it when her shows begin in the US this upcoming wk. Also her management controls so many of the satellite radio stations. They had their stations (Live Nation) play Give Me All Your Luvin'once an hour for 2 weeks and it got that song on the Billboard Hot 100. For some reason they did not do that with Girl Gone Wild so that song tanked and never entered the US Billboard Hot 100. I hope they force thier Live Nation satellite stations to play TUTR. If they do not, the single will just die like Girl Gone Wild. Because MDNA has no real hit and no songs on the radio her MDNA album fell out of the Billboard Top 200 chart after a couple of months and has not come back. I hope it comes back on the next chart but it is sad this album only really sold well its FIRST week and most of that was bundling with her international concert ticket sales. They need to market this better!

  5. Yes the song is available in the US now but it has yet to get radio spins by the 25th of September. The ridiculous delay will try to capitalize on the North American leg of the MDNA Tour. Too late but still better than nothing.

  6. Interscope begins to promote TUTR for U.S. radio airplay on September 25. From what I understand they're going to be pretty aggressive. FINALLY! Since Interscope owns several radio stations, I think it might work like it did with Give Me All Your Luvin' last winter and in my opinion, this is a much better song.

    1. Hmmm that would be manipulating airplay if that happens. They never did that with Girl Gone Wild. It remains to be seen how TUTR impacts come 25th September.

  7. Sept 25? I mean WHY wait another month? In this digital era, songs usually pop in a day like Taylor Swift's single. By the way, My Top Icon, you are so right about manipulation of the charts. Interscope did it for GMAYL. For 2 wks all their stations HAD to put it in heavy rotation following the Superbowl. That was enough to get that song to chart on the Hot 100. For whatever reason they did not force their stations to play GGW so it died. I just do not see what the wait until Sept 25 is for? TUTR is not exactly new and they shoud be pushing it now. Madonna is back in the US now. The dance charts are stupid. Madonna couild burp and get to number one on that chart. It is a meaningless chart. I am shocked her album MDNA fell out of the Top 200 chart after 2 quick months. It came out in March and was gone before you could blink an eye. I do hope it comes back into the US charts. 2 months for a Madonna album is pathetic. Why is this happening?

    1. Madonna would be halfway with her North American leg by Sept25. it doesn't make any sense really. It could be that they will use the 1st 4 weex to create awareness with the single since it is being performed on tour. And when it impacts on the said date, most fans would be likely to request it and/or DJs more amenable to play it on the radio. Interscope won't attempt a GMAYL-sized manipulation with TUTR since it will be an obvious airplay spike after the lacklustre GGW and the public will shout foul. The MDNA album bombing was more on a lack of proper promotion on Madonna's part as the tour became the priority after the Superbowl. Under normal circumstances, a proper album promo follows after the release and the tour finishes that era when favourable sales have been achieved. In MDNA's case, casual and non-fans never knew she had a new album out; only some netizens and loyal fans knew. Her present management and record label make a blunderous pair. It seems to me she has little control of what is happening and just goes with the flow. She needs to take full control by her next musical project or else it's all downward spiral then on.

  8. what is sad is all we hear about her album is a hit and was #1. my family live in tel aviv. a group of them went to see her show there in may and they bought their ticks on line back in feb. when they bought their ticks in feb they were given the option to bundle in the mdna album so they did. lots of overseas ticket buyers did that and all those sales couted for her usa first week thus getting her the #1. it is not like madonna is the only artist to do that but the whole system is unfair. people in israel and the rest of europe or anyone outside of the usa should not be included in usa sales but of course are. artists sell downloads for 99 cents and do all kinds of things to get a #1 and usually for just a week then the album falls. what is sad with mdna is it fell completely out of the top 200 usa billboard chart in just over 2 months. some weeks sales of albums are so bad in the us that the album at #200 might only sell 500-1,000 copies in one week. for mdna to not sell that is a week is rather pathetic. her usa tour dates should get mdna back on the billboard top 200 chart hopefully next week.if not it is unreal. if interscope forces their radio stations to play tutr as of sept 25 the single can chart but only for the time the stations are foreced to play the song. once again it is sad since it is not a true hit. i did not hear gmayl on any regular radio stations and of course never heard ggw. madonna is a great artist and i cannot believe is not able to get airplay or album sales the old fashioned way. her hit album sold more in the first week in march than allllll the weeks since march and so many of those first week sales are from people living outside of the usa. if her chart number was based on only usa sales it would have been sad. let us all hope her album peps up as her tour heats up in the usa

    1. Bundling happens as a convenient and profitable alternative to normal retail selling. In a normal selling environment, bundling becomes attractive since you get more value for your purchase. A consumer can avail of all the items in a bundle for an attractive price than buying them separately. In the music industry lately, an artist can sell an album better when bundled at the back of a much-anticipated concert. But this bundle is NOT compulsory. A fan can always reject the bundle and just buy tickets as he pleases. Several nay-sayers in the media have conditioned the minds of the public that fans were coerced/forced to avail of the bundle when it wasn't the case! Fans availed of the bundle because of the fact that aside from wanting to see the concert, they also wanted the then-to-be-released MDNA album! Getting both (tickets and album) made the deal convenient in one go than getting two separate transactions. Casual fans (hoping for a greatest hits concert) who just wanted the tickets and not Madonna's new material rejected the bundle... So people who claim there was shade for MDNA getting to #1 due to the bundling scheme are just haters who try to magnify a non-issue... The reason why MDNA fell-out of the top during the second week was the fact that almost ALL of the fans who wanted the album got it on: 1.) pre-order, 2.)bundling, 3.)normal retail & download pruchase by the 1st charting week. Since MDNA was never promoted traditionally, casual fans and non-fans never bothered buying during the succeeding weeks hence the decline and lack of sustaining sales for the album.

As for each country's album tallies, there are no known inter-mingling of sales since every country has it's own comprehensive count independent to that of the others. Israel's sales do not and will never count towards American charts!

Give Me All Your Luvin' was within the Top 5 in about 13 countries (Top 40 in more) and Girl Gone Wild achieved modest Top 20 placements in about 10 countries (Top 40 in more). They're already forgotten in America but were loved in other parts of the world. TUTR is unfortunately flopping and fans knew it coming; what with a blunderous combination of M's management and record label.

  9. Madonna is not the only artist to do this. They all do. What is unfair though is so many of the sales from her First week's sales (her only week to really SELL albums) were to people overseas like the fans in countries like Israel and Turkey who bought ticks to her show and got the bundled album. In the USA the album charts are dictated by SALES (physical or download) so after most albums debut at #1 (or close to it) they fall BUT NOT as fast as MDNA. I truly am SHOCKED at how MDNA disappeared after 2 quick months. Remember to be #200 on the Billboard Album Chart you do not need to sell that many albums. Considering her album came out in March, three quarters of all her album sales were done that first week thanks to aggressive pre-sales and bundling from OVERSEAS ticket sales. I guess Interscope CAN force their satellite stations to play TUTR and that can get her on the Billboard Hot 100 but I really fear the American public is tired of her now. When she was on the awards show and talked in a British accent, many Americans were sort of sickend by it. Madonna is from Michigan, not from England. When Americans live in England they do not develop an English accent (unless they move as kids). When English peoople move to the US, the keep their wonderful English accents. This might sound silly but things like this hurt her. Elton John's picking at Madonna hurts her and when she tours to another country and finds ways to get press (like making fun of the French polititian)it hurts her in the US. Madonna is super talented and should just focus on her music and entertaining. I think a lot of things she does herself hurt her. I want TUTR to get on Radio because it is good not because Interscope forces their stations to play it. GMAYL only charted because of that and when they stopped forcing the airplay it died immediatlely in the USA, yet they call it a hit. If she is meeting this much resistance at radio now in the USA, how will it get better? I mean Madonna is 54 now and no female in the USA outside of Cher has ever made it on the US charts at this age.

    1. Everything was done within the norms of usual music marketing. The boost of first week sales was the result of the bundling scheme, normal sales and pre-orders. But please do not be confused. All bundlings done in countries outside America DO NOT COUNT towards US Charts! It is really absurd to say that sales from bundlings in Israel and Turkey got credited in the US Billboard Top 200! MDNA was #1 in Turkey and also #1 in Israel so the sales of the bundling schemes there naturally got credited THERE as well... and like i said earlier, MDNA's fall from the top on it's 2nd week was the result of scant to no promotion. How can an album sustain and maintain high sales when Madonna never did any traditional promotion? After the first week, all she did was launch her perfume at Macy's then went straight to rehearsals for the MDNA Tour. Of course, casual fans and non-fans who never knew she had a new album out couldn't care less.

Airplay manipulation will never happen. Interscope has done so much damage in handling Madonna's 1st project with them that doing such a shady thing would completely destroy what little credibility is left. We fans know that only a miracle can make TUTR a hit. Ageist Radio will never play anything that Madonna sings anymore. But that will never stop her from being relevant. MDNA Tour is surprisingly doing better as expected. If only she included Australian and Asian legs, she would easily break the record of her last tour Sticky & Sweet.

  10. She needs to leave Interscope and contemplate breaking with Livenation. Everything went wrong the moment she left Warners, its amazing and unthinkable but the strength behind Madonna really was, Warners! If it were Madonna, then why has her latest era been such a disaster? Musically she is in an even worse state than her Erotica/Bedtime story era, even Hard Candy pumped out the huge 4 Minutes and Give it 2 Me! That album stalled because it just wasnt that inspiring! MDNA flopped because it lacked cohesion, direction and proper promotion! THOSE faults lay as much with an incompetent Madonna as it did with an inept and inexperienced Interscope/Livenation. Livenation are a touring company, Interscope an amateur newbie company used to pulling stupid stunts to sell albums, as for Madonna, Warners handled her marketing, not her! Madonna came up with the art, Warners selivered it, and it shows!

    1. I echo your sentiments the moment GMAYL was chosen as the lead single off MDNA. Had they started on the right foot by releasing GGW as the lead single in late 2011, Masterpiece on AC Radio during the Golden Globes nomination week, GMAYL as it was during the Superbowl and allocated at least a week each for UK and US traditional album promotion, it wouldn't have been as worse as the current predicament. Presently, the only thing that redeems this era is the $ucce$$ful tour but even MDNA Tour's grosses do not match Sticky & Sweet's feat yet. Warner was indeed a significant force that sustained Madonna's prolific career. With them, her singles were given the necessary push to become authentic hits. All it took was the blunderous Guy O-Interscope tandem to reduce 3 decades of hit-making to rubble.

  11. the whole thing upsets me. madonna is a smart gal but somehow turns many people off. i agree her english accent is a sad way to get attention. madonna needs to loosen up and just focus on music and business and stay away from things that make her look desparate. i see from these posts they will push tutr on tuesday aug 25 so i guess she will finally enter the usa charts then. her last album to do so badly in the usa was american life. that one lasted 14 weeks in the billboard top 200 album chart. mdna has not even made 10 wks but now that she is back in north america and with tutr ready to get pushed her album can come back on the charts. it is still sad to think a madonna album not staying on the top 200 charts for even 10 weeks. i looked at the billboard top 200 and old acts like pink floyd have been on with older albums over 800 weeks

    1. It is high unlikely that TUTR will chart in the Top 100 come Sept.25. The extended delay of the radio release already ruined it's chances back in week33 when it made #3 on Hot Single Sales but didn't manage to even bubble under the Top 100 due to the lack of the necessary radio stats.

    1. As of 07 September, 2012 9:10 AM, MDNA (Deluxe Version) - Madonna is #252 in US iTunes. It has "improved" from obscurity right after the concert in Philadelphia. In Canada, the tour "helped" the album peak again within the Canadian iTunes Top 10 Albums briefly for like a couple of days but has now dropped to #98 as of 07 September, 2012 9:15 AM. However, these movements, despite a tinge of positivity, won't really impact the main charts yet.

The only thing being anticipated is that MDNA might show up in the lower regions of the US Top 200 once those customers who availed of the bundling way back start to redeem their album copies (digital or physical). Those redemptions, if high enough for a certain charting week, could still make the charts considering MDNA needs only more than 1000+ copies to place #199 or so when competition is nil. Not to mention the new purchases by casual fans who would eventually be moved by the MDNA Tour buzz. She still has 30+ stops for the US leg and 5 remaining Canadian dates; with these to consider, MDNA just MIGHT re-enter the Top 200... TUTR needs a miracle to chart as all odds point otherwise.

  13. Madonna’s last hit single in the USA was 4 Minutes (thanks to Justin Timberlake) in 2008. Her last solo hit was Hung Up in 2005. Hung Up went to #7 on the Billboard Hot 100. Her last number one in the USA was Music in 2000 and her last number one prior to that was Take a Bow in 1994. All of these singles were radio hits for her (unlike GMAYL) which only made it for the 2 weeks Interscope had their satellite stations play it post SuperBowl. Since the Billboard Hot 100 in the USA requires both downloads, physical sales (nowadays nearly zero) and airplay it would appear Madonna’s days at radio in the US are over. By this I mean mainstream radio. In the USA market, mainstream radio is comprised of so much rap/r&b. Artists like Nicki Minaj rule and younger acts rule. What Madonna should do is less dance stuff (that is not radio friendly at least in the US) and focus on Adele styled music and beautiful ballads such as Masterpiece. A song like Masterpiece would not hve been a hit at mainstream radio in the USA but would have been a hit at AC (Adult Contemporary). Masterpiece would have maybe Bubbled Under on Billboard’s Hot 100 or made it on the bottom of the Hot 100 but been a Hit at AC radio. AC radio is important since people do listen to it and then become aware she has a new album. Instead of MDNA selling so pathetically week after week, MDNA could have been a hit as an album. The Dance charts in the USA ARE a joke. I live in New Jersey and went out dancing several times in the past 3 weeks since we had guests. We went to clubs on the Jersey Shore, in Newark and New York. Even though TUTR was allegedly #1 on the Dance Chart we did not hear it in clubs. Of all things we heard La Isla Bonita, Vogue and Ray of Light. Most dance clubs in the USA play mostly their own DJ stuff with a lot of pounding instrumental and now and then mix something in that people know by artists like Madonna, Michael Jackson, or Cher. The funny thing is when they play something familiar people love to dance. To me, the song they should have promoted is Masterpiece. Madonna is a 54 year old woman with talent and they need to stop marketing her as a girl. GMAYL was an embarrassing song for her. Maybe I am wrong but I fear when they try to market TUTR to radio on Sept 25, it will not get airplay in the USA. To me, they need to then focus on Masterpiece which they never did (at least in the USA). THAT song is wonderful and can get AC play and that will help her album re-chart. To think any studio album by Madonna NOT charting for 10 weeks is unheard of!

    1. I share the same ideas with you Lisa. that's why i said "Had they started on the right foot by releasing GGW as the lead single in late 2011, Masterpiece on AC Radio during the Golden Globes nomination week, GMAYL as it was during the Superbowl and allocated at least a week each for UK and US traditional album promotion, it wouldn't have been as worse as the current predicament."

Masterpiece had a hit written all over it but it just didn't fit with their plans for the dark-dance era. You can tell that it was just included in the album because of it's Golden Globe recognition. Otherwise it would have been left on the W.E soundtrack at best. If only they released it in the US as well, it could have had a better chance at the lower end of the charts. I think they were even surprised of it's modest European airplay run despite having no promotion and with W.E bombing.

This era is a failed experiment if at all. They were testing if Madonna could sell singles and album on sheer Queen of Pop status alone. We all know they were wrong. If by the next project they don't up the ante, then Madonna's decline will sadly accelerate.

  14. Great debate on the reasons why Madonna seems to be bombing, at least commercially right now. I find MDNA has lasting appeal and I am still listening to the deluxe version religiously since its release having removed a few songs from the playlist, but I'm Addicted, Love Spent, I'm a Sinner and the GMAYL remix are sublime. She released totally the wrong singles from the album and I was pleased that the album was a step up in terms of quality. I think MDNA fits in nicely in terms of Madonna's "biography" written into each album she produces, but I think people were expecting an album of beautiful ballads and innovative, knock-out dance tracks to break them out of world recession blues tracks and they didn't get enough of either to make up for the lame marketing campaign.

    1. Yes lots of people refuse to grow out of Madonna's classic hits as such expect she does the same type of sounds for her new albums. She may give a throwback and reference her past styles but not altogether repeat a trodden era unlike other artists who got stuck in a ballad-r&b-merry-go-round for decades. So it is fairly understandable if the public find MDNA falling short of their usual expectations.

  15. I personally hope Madonna’s next album is something personal to HER and not done just to rack up Dance Chart #1s. That chart is so foolish. Years ago it made sense when millions of 12” Vinyl singles were sold and millions of CD-Maxi singles were sold. Back then the songs on the US Billboard Dance Chart had to SELL SELL SELL these physical copies and then of course the airplay. The US used to have stations that catered to Dance stuff and even Top 40 favored it. Now Dance is dead on mainstream US Radio. The only way dance can chart is if it is by an R&B/Rapper or very currently hot young artist or if the Dance single has one of the previously mentioned acts on it. When I heard Madonna was including Nicki Minaj and MIA I was excited since I felt THAT would get her radio play. When I heard GMAYL I realized Nicki and MIA were only on it for seemingly seconds and THAT would not be enough to get the song into mainstream. Many mainstream pop acts use acts like Nicki Minaj and company to create real hooks in their songs to get them into the Billboard Hot 100. In the case of GMAYL their inclusion was just gratuitous and so short it felt like a blip... This Madonna era is a mess in my opinion with most of us fans just sitting on the sidelines sort of shocked and embarrassed? The media keeps telling us she is breaking records and makes it seem all is well. Of course WE know the reality of it all. Here we are in Sept and her album was released in March. MDNA sold the first 2 months but only really well for ONE week. In the USA her sales were only good in week one, since by weeks 2 on they fell fast from week to week until it was OUT of our Top 200 album chart and has been out of our Top 200 chart now for months. THAT is unheard of for a Madonna studio album. I know Turn up the Radio goes for ads in the US on Sept 25 so I will hope it clicks with some of the radio programmers. Believe it or not, in the US just having the word Radio in the title can help her. Many DJ’s might try this song because of the word Radio in the title… Hey, it give our gal a shot! Madonna needs to be ON the radio in order to SELL albums. We want TUTR to get good airplay so her MDNA comes back from the dead!

    1. Great to know that there are still fans who have faith in the Queen when most others have prevaricated. I don't have much hopes on TUTR anymore; the delay killed its momentum. But anything being done and to be done are still welcome: hit or no hit, just to keep Madonna on the mainstream.

Rumour has it that GANGBANG will see a release this Fall with the footages of the live performance to be used for the video. It's a longshot single once more considering i root for I'M ADDICTED to breathe life to MDNA. i wish they can be double A-sides at best. Then LOVE SPENT can close the ill-struck era by Thanksgiving.

The sad thing is I’m Addicted and GangBang and Love Spent are all wonderful and if all are release all will go to #1 on the foolish dance chart and all we will hear is how popular she is. However in the USA she likely will get no mainstream radio play whatsoever and these so-called hits will be sort of fake if you know what I mean. I still say Masterpiece should go to Adult Contemporary radio. THAT song CAN get airplay on AC stations in the USA. With radio play on AC stations her album will finally BEGIN to sell. In the US market the only week it truly was a hit was its first week in March. Technically the first DAY since nearly all those sales were pre-orders for MDNA. In the USA just as it is VERY easy to get a #1 on the Dance chart, it is VERY hard to enter the Billboard Hot 100 if you do not get a ton of downloads and radio play. Even Bubbling Under is hard to do. Girl Gone Wild at least Bubbled Under the Hot 100 briefly at #108. I know that sounds pathetic but believe it or not that is not so bad since at least she achieved that. In this era, THAT is a bigger accomplishment than the Dance Chart. I hope TUTR gets enough adds on Sept 25 to Bubble Under the Hot 100 or even enter the chart at a low number since that is a big accomplishment for a 54 year old! When Madonna came to the USA on Aug 28 to Philadelphia I was so sure MDNA would re-enter the Billboard Top 200 album chart. Of course it did not. When she did Boston then New York, I was sure it would re-enter the Billboard Top 200 album chart. Of course it did not. As of the new Billboard Top 200 dated Sept 22 MDNA is still not on the chart. I think she finally will re-enter with her shows in Atlantic City, Chicago and DC. Don’t forget to be at #200 you only need to sell 500-1000 copies most weeks. I don’t see how she can miss that!!!! I will not give up on TUTR until I see the charts the first week of Oct.

    1. Now it can be said. MDNA goes back in the Top 200 at #140. After 14 weeks of being in oblivion, the tour somehow breathed new life to the album. Or it could be the redemptions managed to put it through. Either way, it's interesting how she keeps it on that position or improve as the weeks go.

  17. Now just like you guys, I'm a huge fan. Been for a long time. Trust me, I want to see chart topping hits, etc. like you. The MDNA album is underrated. I'm not sure why, but do you notice that Madonna albums released in the early years of a decade are the most underrated...Erotica, American Life, and now MDNA. Guess I'm weird with numbers...lol. But you know what, sometimes I like the challenge. I like that through some negative criticism, Madonna can still be true to herself and to her fans. She is releasing great music and on one heck of a great tour, which I've seen twice with two more to go.! No one's like Madonna...no one will ever be. I'm glad I'm along for the ride and taking this nice journey with her! My life would just never be the same without Madonna...never!!! In regards to promotions for the album, I'm torn. One side is like, what the heck is Live Nation doing to promote the album while she's on tour? But on the other hand, the Super Bowl...114 million watchers...what more do you need to promote the album. But maybe she could've had MDNA with the release date on the screens too while singing the wonderful halftime show. C'mon now...everyone knew she was releasing an album. Fine, GMAYL wasn't her best work, but you know what, it was fun - reminiscent of Beautiful Stranger. Of course, it went well with the football game...go NY Giants! :)

Yes, I think Turn Up the Radio should've been the lead single because it's classic Madonna like Holiday and Music! TUTR should be number 1! To me, this song is simple, fun, and total sunshine. We also need to realize that American radio is fickle. One minute everyone loves you, the next they're trying to bring you down. I used to get so upset that they wouldn't play her songs...Sorry and Jump were big hits everywhere in the world, but not in the USA...why why why?!? But now I realize it's not about numbers...it's about enjoying the moment and being inspired. But through it all, Madonna goes forward. We also need to realize that Madonna's been around as an artist for 30 years now...30 years! Who else can say that? 30 years! Of course it's not going to be the same as the '80s. But life is never like that. There's ups and downs, but by staying true to who you are, we'll all make it through. Yes, I still hope TUTR is a big hit. Live Nation really needs to get busy. You think with the 1st new album under them, they would be knocking on the radio stations' doors to get the music on the radio! They kind of dropped the ball on this one. But again, we move forward. Lisa, like you, I'm not giving up on TUTR...we need to request too! Let's have faith, everyone! No one can take the joy Madonna bring me everyday of my life!

  18. i 2 luv madge but it seems in the us at least she can do no rite. i mean to have her mdna cd nearly invisible since week 1 in march is sick. i see mdna crawled back in the album chart at 140 but that is so pathetic. we are happy 4 that but you know what i mean. tutr is gettng pushed + she is touring the hell out of the us so there is no way they can say she is invisible now. i feel tutr will finally get some radio ads and bubble under finally. in other countries like in europe she can still sell and get air but in the usa it is very hard. this is the wk 4 tutr. i want mdna but up in the top 40 then top 10. it actually is not as hard as it seems. most in the usa do not know she has an album or do and do not have it. now with her constantly touring people can finally buy it. i think it will sell sell sell finally don't ya'11?

  19. It remains to be seen if TUTR charts in october when radio finally picks it up this week. But on CHR/POP she doesn't stand a chance. HOT AC and AC are her best avenues for now albeit on the tail-end. MDNA Tour has done it's best to push album sales past half-a-million mark. I'm already happy with that.

  20. I am glad to have found this thread. This morning the AM DJ's were doing their thing and they discussed new radio tracks. When they mentioned Turn Up the Radio they referred to Madonna as HagDonna. They then made fun of her cheerleader outfits and called her an old lady. I was so pissed off. Of course they did not play her song and just made fun of it. Later in their music gossip section they said Cher was going to drop a single this fall then a new Warner Bros album. When they discussed Cher they did not mention her age. The last time I checked Cher was a LOT older than Madonna! Why attack Madonna's age? She is still super talented and looks great! I just do not understand. I have been flipping radio stations since Tuesday to try to catch Turn Up the Radio. Have any of you heard it ON the RADIO? We need it on this week!!!

    1. ^^^ That is sad to know. Cher's less flamboyant ways may have given her the advantage of some "respect" from some people and set her on a different class apart from Madonna who isn't afraid to speak her mind and shock people with her antics. Madonna's recent controversies aren't helping either as people tend to view them in a negative light. But these comments by media people influence listeners' behaviours towards Madonna and i find that rather appalling...TUTR only had a handful of adds since Tuesday as expected of ageist radio.

  21. Madonna and Cher! Over the years (since Madonna’s career began) we have heard about these comparisons. Madonna and Cher do share some similarities such as long careers with Madonna’s now 30+ years and Cher’s 50+ years. I too have heard negative comments about Madonna and her age and this or that. Of course I too get upset with these comments. While Madonna and Cher have many similarities they also have many differences. Madonna is a type A personality sort of like a workaholic. Cher is much more laid back. Cher loves to be off work and just hang out. Between Cher’s projects she tends to fade into the woodwork and just chill. Madonna is not the type to chill. She is a worker bee. I think Lady Gaga is more like Madonna in that she always seems to be ON. To put this another way, if I owner a multi-national conglomerate corporation I would hire Madonna or lady Gaga to run it. However, if I just wanted to chill out and have a cup of coffee or glass of wine and relax with someone I would chose Cher. I think the reason sometimes the media is harder on Madonna is she is perceived as tough and driven. Cher is seen as someone who comes and goes as she pleases. She will pop out with a movie or album a couple of ties a decade then go away for sometimes years at a time and just do things like surf, ride her motorcycle and hang with family and friends. I guess you can say non-threatening. Cher is like a 60s hippie chick in today’s world. I am not saying Cher is not a strong person but somehow the media and society are not threatened by her. Madonna IS a strong personality and strong women are often treated this way. I think it is sad though when they make age comments since age 54 is no big deal. In the US market they keep using the photo of Madonna in her cheerleader outfit for GMAYL. That hurts her too. While us fans love it and get that cheerleader outfit it does seem rather youthful for her. Yes, I know Cher still pulls out her naked butt If Could Turn Back Time outfit when she tours but for some reason that silly outfit is OK. Maybe it is because Cher makes it silly or maybe Cher is just saying I do not give a shit in her own way without saying it. I still love my Madge but wish she would not get ridiculed as much.

  22. It's sad how Madonna gets treated. Is it jealousy of people out there not achieving what she has. But this country is about ageism. She is 54 (who cares). She is in amazing shape and puts on a great show. TUTR is another great radio hit and Was GGW. But I do think Live Nation and Interscope have ruined it for her and I think Madonna is way to busy to care and knows she still has many fans. Her tour is doing well. She cancelled Australia and that would have put her ahead of Stick Sweet. I saw her at yankee stadium and there was no British accent. I think living there the acccent rubbed off and she may have been using it for a film (who knows). She adopts children and people give her grief, she joins the Kabbalah and gets criticism, she is strict with her kids and she is bitch. Really lighten up folks. She has her head together and knows what she wants.

  24. TUTR has gotten adds little by little and considering the ageist stance towards her, that is already a good thing. I've yet to confirm but they say she's had close to 50 spins. So if we're talking about the Top40 Airplay she could be on the #100+ mark now. She's having better impressions on AC than Pop though.

MDNA didn't appreciate either. It's down to #142 from #94 last week.

  25. Thank you for the positive update My Top Icon! In my office we listen to satellite radio all day and in my car and at home I switch stations and hear both satellite and local stations. Even though I listen to hours and hours of radio I have yet to hear TUTR but I still have hope! Our gal hits Los Angles this week then Vegas AND has dates in the US continuously until Thanksgiving so that gives her many weeks to sell the MDNA album and get TUTR up the charts. I have heard more about Cher’s new album which might be pushed into the beginning of 2013. I too just find it so funny that Cher is not referred to as an older gal since she is the eldest of all. I think it is her attitude and the fact she is not so serious. Either way, Cher WILL ultimately get the same treatment as Madge does. Any singles off Cher’s Warner Brother’s album will get very little airplay due to the ageist US DJ’s. Her singles will struggle to even Bubble Under the Hot 100 as Madge’s but will go to #1 on the silly Dance Club Play chart. Of course when her singles hit #1 at Dance, Billboard will go on and on how Cher is the oldest woman to hit number one (since she always is) and she will get lots of press for that just as Madonna does each time she tops that foolish chart. The poor performance of the MDNA album puzzles me. I am happy MDNA is back on the chart but it is holding on by the seat of its pants. With Madonna IN the USA crisscrossing the country I would think she would be selling at least 3,000 copies a week. At #142 it would be under 1,000 and not much more. She sold more in her pre-sales (which gave her the #1 debut) since she has sold since that first week in March. Hopefully all her big USA dates from now until the end of November will help MDNA move back into the Top 100, then Top 40 albums (at the very least). Adele is still near the top of the chart with 21 and her album 19 still is selling big in the USA and of course she is not on tour and preggers in the UK, yet is still pumping out album sales in the USA. Adele’s 21 album is closing in on 10 Million in sales in the US. At the very slow rate MDNA is selling getting to 1 Million will take years.

  26. Still no adds here. It seems like another invisible song except to fans. Maybe the charts (out tomorrow) will have some positive news for TUTR. We will hope for good Billboard chart news tomorrow. I cannot see the Bubbling Under chart online, only the Billboard Hot 100. My Top Icon, can you see the Billboard Bubbling Under chart? You need a subscription to it I think. I just cannot get to it.

    ReplyDelete
  27. There have been adds by far but it's the number of spins that matter. If she gets less spins then the song tanks lower to oblivion. The momentum is very slow to nil and doesn't seem to increase. So far these are the stations that have added TUTR since last month after checking in the internet...

KNHC Seattle, KHHM Sacramento, WXXX Burlington, KKPN Corpus Christi, WKZL Greensboro, KWAV Monterey, WDEF Chattanooga, WJKK Jackson, WTOK San Juan, SiriusXM, KVLY McAllen, WXYK Biloxi,KUDD Salt Lake City, WJXB Knoxville, WLDB Milwaukee, WRSA Huntsville, WWZY Ocean, ...and several others i can't track anymore.

As for the Top 100, it is high unlikely to chart anymore. I got no subscription to the charts but after checking with many sources it didn't bubble under last week and may not bubble under this week either.

    1. Let's see if she sells some more copies when her guesting on the Ellen DeGeneres Show gets aired soon. MDNA has just been certified GOLD. At least it got certified for something. PLATINUM would really be a relief though.

      Delete
  29. Gold mean 500,000 copies. She sold something like 385,000 copies her first day thanks to the bundling and other advanced sales. That means from the release date back in March until now (Oct 2012), she sold 115,000. Currently she has averaged under 1,000 copies per week. YES, Ellen's show will help her spike UP and she IS in the USA continuously now until near the end of November. The SAD thing is with NO radio play it is like she is invisible and it does not appear Turn Up the Radio will even Bubble Under the Hot 100. If she continues selling at 1,000 per week if you do the math getting to 1 Million is going to take forever. Don't forget, in the weeks she was not even in the Hot 100 (which were many) she sold more like 500 copies in a week. I hope her record label and managemt start doing things to HELP HER! I mean how can they let her album die out? MDNA is a good album and her tour is awesome so why WHY do the sales suck? It will go Platinum but not until 2015 or later. The only way to speed this up for her is to get her ONE HIT off the album. Do you think they can finally get a single out and promote it so she gets a REAL HIT?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Yes just in excess of half-a-million sales for MDNA. Sadly, this era has reached it's dying days now. No use drumming up the album as her Management and Label no longer want to resurrect a dead album. Let's just bask at the $ucce$$ of the MDNA Tour and look forward to her next studio album come 2014 hopefully.

  32. MDNA is out of the Top 200 US Album chart again. That means sales are likely under 500 copies for the week AND she is IN the USA in the midst of her successful tour. Think about that! When MDNA was out of the charts week after week when she was on tour overseas I got it. This I do not get. Apparently what it means is all of us fans pre-ordered MDNA and all of our sales counted in week one back in March. Since week one in March sales plummeted to this point which means once us fans bought it, that was it. Turn up the Radio is a wonderful song and I love her video yet it went nowhere in the USA due to radio resistance and horrible strategy by her management team. I have friends into Cher as I am into Madonna and they are telling me Cher’s label, Warner Brothers, is planning a huge push for her new album coming out in a couple of months then she will do a big world tour. I told them Cher will have the same outcome as Madonna in terms of her singles. She will go to #1 on the Club Play Dance chart and likely not enter the Billboard Hot 100 or even Bubble Under. Of course this is not because Cher’s single will be bad, it is due to radio resistance just as Madonna had. I do think Cher’s album will sell better. Since Cher’s strategy is not as much about entering at #1, it is more about longevity, I think her album will linger on the charts longer since she has more good will. Somehow Cher is perceived differently than Madonna. Madonna is a stronger type personality and maybe more of an acquired taste. Young people relate to Cher even though she is a lot older than Madonna. Those of us who love Madonna do not get this but I know it is true. Sadly both Madonna and Cher are making career mistakes. Both women are VERY talented yet both women are still doing pop and dance music. Cher has been around 50 years and Madonna for 30 so why bother trying to compete with the younger talent free pop stars whose careers poop out after 5-10 yrs. anyway? Barbra Streisand is a great example of an artist who WAS a Pop star in the 60s, 70s and 80s but then moved on to Adult Contemporary and standards to great success. Streisand puts out albums every year or two or three at the most and sings whatever SHE wants to. Her albums also SELL! I am not a big Streisand fan but respect what SHE is doing. Friends of mine in NY went to see Barbra Streisand last weekend in Brooklyn, NY. They said she stood on stage and sang. She did not need lots of costume changes and backup dancer. The concert was about her voice! They have seen Madonna in concert and Cher. They said Madonna and Cher’s shows are similar with costume changes and sets and backup dancers. The sad thing is both Madonna and Cher are talented and like Streisand CAN SING. I wish Madonna would go and do future albums like Streisand of music SHE wants to record. Picture Madonna in concert just standing there singing like stuff from Evita and other standards. Madonna needs to move on from trying to do Pop/Dance since she no longer needs to prove herself. I would love to see Madonna is a place like Carnegie Hall in NYC standing in one simple gown belting out standards showing us all her true talent. She is being so wasted trying to be a current Pop/Dance artist. Hopefully the horrible legs of the MDNA album and the zero movement on the Pop charts for Turn up the Radio will make Madonna move in a different career direction. Madonna needs to flex her muscle and show everyone she is a true singer unlike so many of the younger artists out there.

    1. What happens to Madonna's career in this decade is pretty much predictable as she will venture more in the dance-club sounds with pop resonance than ever before. This is actually her last stretch at pop relevance so this decade will see if she can still top whatever it was that MDNA-era has achieved as of this time. One thing is certain, Madonna will NOT allow herself to do standard albums or covers or mellow ones even though she knows she will SELL better on those considering her now legendary status. Something about Madonna emanates energy and her doing down-tempo albums when her talent is actually maximized in pop-dance would be a step to the retirement era. And as we all know, Madonna wouldn't want to relinquish her Queen of POP status just yet. When her face and body could still pass off as that of a 30-to-early-40-yr-old, i would still expect her to churn quality pop-dance music with some ballads on the side. It will be on the next decade perhaps that Madonna will succumb to the Standard Adult Contemporary ballads-album because by that time it will "look" appropriate and consistent to her then maturing looks. That is also the time that her tour would be more on Greatest Hits knowing she could sell better on these!

    1. We should really move on to the next era as MDNA has proved disappointing considering all the blunders the label and management have done. As point of comparison, if Cher's upcoming album and tour garner more favourable attention then it is down to marketing and the personality itself that does the trick.

  35. Now c'mon...MDNA is not a failure. Notice the same thing occurred with American Life and Erotica. What I just don't get is how management even makes these blunders considering Madonna is their boss. Like is it that difficult to go to Radio 1 and say get this song on the air...now?!?!?! Considering Madonna moved to Live Nation, you think they would be doing everything imaginable. Yes, they did that with Gimme All Your Luvin', but that's all? What even ticks me off more is that her tour is the biggest one of the year...and best one too, mind you...making them lots of money too. TUTR should've been Number 1 or one ginormous radio hit. My fave song on MDNA because it's a classic Madonna song. Wonder if she's going to release more singles or not. But Madonna is still Number one to me! Enjoying the moment!!!

  36. GMAYL WAS pushed and because the Clear Channel stations HAD to play it twice an hour, it had just enough momentum to crawl to 10. As soon as they stopped their 2 week mandatory push the song collapsed. GGW was never given that push so it died and TUTR never got that push and died. MDNA is an album us fans love BUT not a hit album. Yes, it entered at #1 but soon fell out of the US Hot 200 Album chart. It is going to take YEARS for MDNA to sell one million copies. Right now it sells well UNDER 500 copies a week AND SHE IS IN THE USA on tour. When her tour ends next week (In the USA) the numbers of MDNA sold will fall even more to a few hundred a week (if that). At that rate getting to One Million in sales will take forever. Madonna needs to focus more on making whatever music SHE wants to do and forget getting hit singles or albums. We are all sad since TUTR would have been great to hear on radio. Yes, we will get more singles off MDNA. They will all go to #1 on the silly Dance Chart but will get zero airplay and thus not chart on the real charts. Sad but true. I just hope Madonna learns from this and just sticks with recording good music and no longer focuses on sales numbers or getting hits.

  37. To be HONEST, i'd love for Madonna to have even more #1 hits on that niche Dance Club Play Chart. It creates a pseudo sense of accomplishment if at all. Love Spent for a X'mas release gets even more rumours (with Guy O saying it could be true!) and i truly want it to happen just so it can close the era properly.

  38. ok if that gets release yes it will go to #1 on dance club play and yes she will get press 4 it. u & i know the dance chart (@ least in the us is a joke). i wish she would just aim her music to ac. mainstream us radio will not play her stuff now or ever but ac would if it was aimed there. when artists had to sell maxi single like the 12 inch dance mattered but not nearly any major recording act gets one week at #1 no matter how little their song gets play in clubs. that chart is like an industry joke. if madonna could get airplay at ac radio it would get her real attention. right now with no singes at radio and a dud album she is invisible in the usa except in the cities she plays and it ends this wk so until her next album she is gone for us in the usa. hey do you think she will do a movie? it has been a long time.

In my area even GMAYL was not on the radio since I do not get satellite so it has been a long time since I have heard Madge on the radio.

I hoope she makes a movie in 2013. I think she should focus on that and try to get a really great role. Imagine if Madonna won an Oscar!!!!!

    1. I'm still rooting for Love Spent to close the era whether it becomes a hit or not. Superstar released as promo-only in Brazil was really uncalled for but it had a good remix from Eddie Amador that made the song bearable --> http://mymonumentalicons.blogspot.com/2012/12/madonna-superstar-single-review.html

i want her to do a movie. That Sunset Boulevard musical should be considered by her as A.L Webber really wants her for the Norma Desmond role! An Oscar can be probably achieved if she does it.

      Delete
  41. Yes, THAT role would win her an Oscar! The Oscar is the Big One!!!!!! A few years ago Jerry Herman wanted to do a re-make of MAME his musical. He wanted Cher as Mame and it was rumored for Madonna to play Vera Charles. The role of Vera Charles is a wonderful role. Vera is Mame's best friend and is a boozy Broadway star and Vera is hysterically funny. The last re-make of Mame was in 1974 with Mame played by Lucille Ball. Vera Charles was played by Beatrice Arthur. Mame and Vera have a great duet called Boosom Budies and it brings the house down. This is they type of role that could get Madonna a Best Supporting Actress Oscar!

I too hope Love Spent comes out soon. What are they waiting for? TUTR is gone gone gone so it is time for a new single!

    1. this would be a longshot though that Madonna will do another musical as she has not expressed interest to doing another one. after the success of Evita, she was the leading choice to play Velma Kelly opposite Goldie Hawn as Roxie Hart for the then film project of Chicago. But that didn't materialize. It would have been great if that pushed through.

  43. I hope Love Spent comes out in the US. A friend of mine in the industry sees sales numbers and told me MDNA now averages 100-200 copies per week. That means sales in the US are far too low to ever pop up on the Top 200 album chart where you need more like 500+ copies to be sold in a week to get on the chart at #200. Years ago, it took more like 1,000-2,000 copies a week to be at #200 but nowadays it takes less since physical copies are not sold as much. Madge needs songs at radio to help with album sales. At the slow rate MDNA is selling it will take many years to get it to 1 million in the USA.

    1. Yes better late than never, Love Spent, if released, could benefit with some promo now that Madge isn't on tour anymore. This is a long-shot possibility. MDNA is basically dead now in the USA. Hope Interscope and Guy O. learn from the fatal mishandling of this era.

  44. what is so frustrating is her mgmt makes it seem this was a huge hit. In the US market, it will be many years before MDNA hits 1 million in sales. I agree with you her mgmt is to blame for this horrible performance in the US market. Yes, her tour did well but even artists like Tony Bennett now in his 80s can pump out album sales. Somehow Madge is not getting new fans in the USA. If they marketed her album correctly she would have lots of new fans but with no radio hits it was doomed. I hope Love Spent comes out so she tops the silly dance chart but I now want her to do a film! We need Madge back in Movies!

    1. Actually, it's us fans who try to magnify the small success of MDNA in the hope of getting more non-fans to give MDNA a chance. The label and Mgt just bask on the opportunity that MDNA is getting any buzz if at all. While it was an awesome album for me, i won't deny that it has actually been laid to rest. It is time for a new project; be it a new album or a new movie role (!) or directing opportunity... Madonna camp is quiet for now. seems to be the queen is re-charging her energies to bounce back by mid-year.

  45. I live in Chicago, IL. We have not heard Madonna in ages on our radio stations unless it is an oldies station. We never heard GMAYL or GGW or TUTR so even if LS is released we will not hear it in Chicagoland. I think Madge needs to move away from Dance/Pop on into music she can excel in like Evita type music. If radio will not play her current stuff let her do what she wants and we fans will buy it. I think MDNA is her worst selling album in the USA. Here in Chicago I don't even see it in stores now. I see Celebration though.

    1. Most veteran artists are unwilling victims of the electronic revolution / internet age wherein you can simply click a link to stream music you want to hear. You don't need to tune in to a station and wait for your favourite song to get spun. Madonna is just one of the artists who got the negative effect of this supposed convenient media. However, Radio still exercises a huge influence to determine who shall lord the mainstream charts. Younger DJs who look to their own age box simply neglect veteran artists despite their relevance. The only way to break this prejudice is for a strong fanbase to actually make persistent requests to specific radio stations. If there are way too much people asking for certain songs consistently, they will eventually get added and played. Sad to say that the only persistent requestors are the younger fans of which Madonna has a small amount of nowadays. I don't really expect the legion of loyal yet matured M fans to simply monitor their stations the way teenagers do when they have responsibilities round the clock... Poor sales of MDNA was due to lack of promotion to casual and non-fans. Only die-hard fans who crave for new material actually bought MDNA. I got friend who may have liked Madonna at some point in the past but never bothered checking MDNA out since they said they never knew and had little input to drum up their interest aside from my constant and incessant raving that MDNA is the blah blah blah M album of all time...

  47. ok if love spent is not getting a us release it appears MDNA is done so we can put a fork in it. MDNA is her poorest performing album of her career at least in the USA. I doubt it ever can get to a million copies sold. I hope Madge goes with a new record label since this one failed her.

    1. She still has 2 more albums to be released via Interscope. If her management learned a lesson with the fatal mishandling of MDNA then the upcoming albums and singles just might be marketed better and promoted actively to avoid similar blunders. Well that is if Mdge is also up to it. :-)

  49. M is smart and will find a way out of that contract. Insterscope sucks and M deserves better. To not sell albums to this degree is sinful. MDNA was like the invisible album other than in week 1. I still want M to do movies again especially a musical!

    1. I'd love for her to star in another film. Her acting is very underrated. People just won't give her that benefit. Anyways, her #secret revolution project is being teased now. It could be a campaign or advocacy. I originally thought it will be a music project of sorts but then again it could be anything unrelated just to hype some attention.
